Not a single one of our children’s class students have lived in a Canada not at war. It is important that they are reminded that while war is not taking place on our soil, children around the world are experiencing the gut wrenching effects and byproducts of war first hand. For them, war is not an abstraction.
Legend states that if 1000 origami cranes are folded, a wish will be granted. As part of our Peace Education initiative, Silent River Kung Fu students fold origami cranes, stringing them into groups of one hundred. Each year on August 6th, the anniversary of the Americans dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, we send 1000 of our cranes to the Children’s Peace Monument in Hiroshima, Japan. Perhaps with the awareness this project creates, the decisions our children make as the future caretakers of our country will be tempered with empathy and compassion
