SRKF Annual Break-a-Thon
October 19 - 21
Fall is here, which means so is our annual Break-a-Thon.
Students work hard throughout the year, and the Break-a-Thon is a chance to showcase that hard work and build empathy at the same time. Students and instructors alike are encouraged to collect pledges, with a goal of $100 per student, all of which will go to the Silent River Benevolent Foundation and be used to support charities like the Northern Lights Wolf Sanctuary and SCARS. With these pledges comes a promise of a minimum of 10 board breaks, which will be done during the week of the Break-a-thon, during regular classes.
All parents are encouraged to come inside and watch. Parent involvement is one of the strongest motivators any student, and nothing hits home quite like support from family.
This is also a huge opportunity to build confidence in both children and adults alike. Nothing feels quite like breaking a board with your fist. The feeling of accomplishment never fades. Even when a student has a failed attempt, it becomes that much more of an accomplishment and success when they finally do break that board in half. We never let a student leave the kwoon feeling defeated; we’ll take the time to ensure every student, three years old or eighty-three years old, successfully completes ten board breaks.
We encourage our students engage in the spirit of the Break-a-thon by engaging the people around them and talking about our charities. Spreading awareness of these issues goes further than a dollar donated. Empathy is the key to correcting the wrongs we see in the world. Awareness is the first step towards empathy.
